It is the policy of the St. Tammany Parish School Board to consider and properly process requests from the public to name Board property, including buildings, portions of buildings, and outdoor facilities located on School Board property, for persons who have contributed to the improvement of the St. Tammany Parish School Board and its delivery of educational services to the children of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. While the Board recognizes that many dedicated employees and committed citizens contribute to the success of the public school system, the naming of a school shall be reserved to recognize service of the highest order in cases where contributions have covered the general population of the entire school system.
The honor of naming Board property will be limited to persons who have been deceased for no less than one year from the date of the request. In rare instances and proper circumstances, the Superintendent may ask the Board to consider and process the naming of Board property in honor of a living person and persons deceased for less than one year. All applicable State provisions shall be followed in such cases.
The Superintendent shall convene an advisory body to be composed of the Superintendent and Board President or their designees, a representative of teachers, a representative of non-certificated employees, an administrator, a representative of the Retired Teachers Association, a representative of PTA, and other organizations, which may be added permanently or temporarily, as deemed necessary. The Superintendent shall develop administrative procedures and requirements to receive, review, and consider applications. The Superintendent shall determine instances that do not require Board action.
Upon completion of the review process, the advisory board shall transmit any recommendation to name Board property to the Board for its consideration, public input, deliberation, and vote. In cases where the advisory board does not approve a request to name Board property, a majority of the Board may decide to consider the petitioner’s request without advisory board approval.
